NAME: Nemu Aohitsugi
CANON: Hypnosis Mic
CANON POINT: July's chapter - her kidnapping alongside Jiro and Saburo
AGE: 17
BACKGROUND: nemu ♡ samatoki ♡ setting
- ♡ World War III - the population decreases 1/3. Ostensibly, Nemu is born when the war is still in full swing. The world is a mess, as people fight one another for survival.
♡ Nemu grows up with her older brother, Samatoki, and their parents. They suffer domestic abuse at the hands of their father - their mother suffering the worst - until he's killed in a murder/suicide by their mother. It leaves them on their own as orphans. Rather than let them be split up, and looking for a way to survive in an unfair world, Samatoki joins the yakuza and works his way up the ranks to ensure that Nemu can live the best possible life he can provide.
♡ Women lead a coup at the end of the AD era, spearheaded by Otome Tohoten, to end the war with hypnosis microphones. They take away weapons from men, and in Japan create the Chuuoku district for their new government (led by women) while the rest of the country is sectioned into divisions. This is the Rule of H era.
♡ A year later in Ikebukuro, Samatoki and Nemu are still together - Samatoki leads a crew named Mad Comic Dialogue, and is still a known member of the yakuza. A rival crew, Stairway 2 Heaven, starts to encroach on their turf to start a territory war. This is caused by a branch of S2H - Naughty Busters, which is where he and Ichiro meet.
♡ After MCD and Naughty Busters fight, then realize they've been used, they band together against the leader of S2H, a loan shark by the name of Mozuku. They trounce him, and he decides to attack them at their weakest link in revenge: their siblings.
♡ Nemu is kidnapped, along with Ichiro's brothers Jiro and Saburo, but certainly doesn't go without a fight. Samatoki finds their apartment ransacked mid-dinner, where she'd been waiting for him to come home. As it turns out, the orphanage head isn't as great a guy as Jiro and Saburo had been raised to believe and is working with Mozuku, having a hand in the kidnapping. But Nemu is confident that their brothers will show up to save them, keeping a level head.
PERSONALITY:
- At first glance, Nemu looks like a peppy, friendly girl made of soft edges. She's sweet, offering up smiles easily. This is the kind of person who looks at the glass as half full, and will find a way to fill it up the rest of the way with her actions and words; kindhearted, encouraging, and supportive, her favorite quote is there's always light behind the clouds. Even if a situation is at its worst, she'll find that light. She was raised in an abusive household in her childhood, and lives in a world now that was plagued by war, one that's still darkened by some pretty ominous clouds even post-war, and she's still kindhearted.
As someone that's suffered a great deal of unfair things early in her life, she's come out of it with a smile on her face and a level head when she's put into poor situations. Even when kidnapped and tied up, she offers comfort to Jiro and Saburo to let them know that they'll come out of it all right. If that isn't optimism, it's certainly at least confidence: her brother will come to her rescue, and she's sure that theirs will as well. That level of faith doesn't come lightly to someone that's been disappointed all of their life, and instead comes from somebody that's been shown you can believe in better things.
Her brother is a yakuza to provide for them, and he does a lot of bad things to make sure they can survive, in a world that's done terrible things to him... but he's not a bad person. Far from it, given the person he helped Nemu grow up to be.
This upbringing and her general personality make her a calming, comforting presence for those around her. It's not hard for her to offer hope, making sure that she can support those that might need it.
But even if she's sweet and kind, she certainly isn't afraid to speak her mind or turn a little sharp at the edges. Smoking at the dinner table, inside? Absolutely not, she'll swipe that cigarette and put it out immediately. Trying to threaten her? She squares her shoulders and faces danger without flinching. Trying to threaten someone else? Nemu won't hesitate to draw attention to herself, instead, and still doesn't back down.
Even at the risk of herself, Nemu will use whatever she can to help others. (This includes telling someone high on drugs, a power trip, and loathing of the kids he took care of that he should make good on his threat of cutting her finger off after she's thrown a shoe at him, and hit her mark.) A powerless position is what she grew up in, with the Aohitsugi family's abusive father; it wouldn't be a far stretch to imagine that's not a position she'll let herself be in without putting up a fight. Considering the state of the apartment when Samatoki returns home to find her kidnap letter, it's easy to imagine that she fought her abductors.
There's no blame for their mother for the situation she grew up in, and none for Samatoki's role in the yakuza, either. Even if his job has put her in danger at least once, if not more in the past. Every meal it looks like the Aohitsugi siblings pay their respects to their mother, though there's certainly no signs of their father at the little shrine they have in their shared home. No love is lost there, but he's such a non-presence in their current lives it's hard to tell what Nemu's current thoughts are. (Samatoki's are clear as day, when their father is brought up; he doesn't take it well, and certainly doesn't speak highly of him.)
There are signs of trauma, though. Not everything is sunshine, after all, and not in their world. Watching Samatoki go to kick their opponents when they're down flashes to a very distressed and frozen Nemu, and she has a hard time watching others be pushed around and hurt. Empathy is certainly present, which she stands up to where she can, but there's a hint of personal experience in those closeup shots of a girl that's seen too much in her young life. Especially when she watches her brother be the one to dole out such violent actions.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
- In a world where people fight using the power of rap, Nemu is extraordinarily ordinary - save for the fact that her older brother is a member of the yakuza. Considering the active role he takes, the number of responsibilities that he's been entrusted to, and the freedom with which he has to move, he has been for quite some time.
Judging by the way the Aohitsugi apartment is ransacked when Nemu is kidnapped, it wouldn't be farfetched to say she fought back as they tried to take her. A young, petite girl that close to that kind of lifestyle - and in a violent world like one that the Hypnosis Mic setting takes place in - can't live her life without knowing some means of how to protect herself. (In the chapter after the canon point I'm taking her from, which came out during this app round so I can't take her from, she literally throws her shoe at the man holding Jiro Yamada at knifepoint because she doesn't have any other weapons or means of attack.)
INVENTORY:
- N/A - she was kidnapped, fam, they probably didn't even let her keep her phone.
